Point Positive
Counseling for those wanting to navigate the river of life with new insight, adaptability, and skill
Life is a river– sometimes glassy, sometimes meandering, sometimes full of turbulent whitewater. The river is never exactly the same, although we often find ourselves in what feels like the same rapid; struggling to get a breath in, colliding with the same obstacles again and again. Other times we might find ourselves “eddied out,” recirculating in the same stagnant pool of water, unable to enter back into the main current.
River runners use a concept called “pointing positive” to navigate turbulence safely. Point positive is a tool to readjust focus towards the direction you want to travel, and away from the obstacles that capture our attention and our momentum. On the river these obstacles might be rocks, undercut ledges, or waterfalls. In the river of our lives, they are maladaptive mental, emotional, and behavioral patterns.
In order to navigate the rapids in our lives skillfully and safely, it is necessary to understand what truly constitutes the obstacles. Too often we consider raw feelings like anger, grief, or anxiety as obstacles to avoid when in reality they are a natural part of the flow of life. The real obstacles are the constructs and patterns we create that trigger and reinforce these feelings. Skillfully identifying our obstacles and “pointing positive” towards the smoothest line helps us navigate a safe and healthy course, and is a major philosophy of my counseling practice. My style of counseling is relational, dynamic, and honors our work together as a soulful journey where you are welcomed and not alone.
Martha’s Specializations:
-
We live in a grief-phobic culture that has inherited a focus on happiness, disallowing for the season of sorrows. Frances Weller writes: “Grief is not a problem to be solved, not a condition to be medicated, but a deep encounter with an essential experience of being human”. We will focus on the “Five stages of Grief” developed by Weller.
-
Trauma-informed care supports the lowering of shame, anxiety, and depressive emotions that if gone unchecked, manifest in maladaptive behaviors. I take a trauma-informed approach to brain and nervous system changes due to childhood or adult trauma.

Body and breath awareness are at the heart of any somatic technique. By recognizing that thoughts, feelings, sensations, and belief systems impact our mental and physical well being, integration of somatic exercises support the healing process.
" I am grateful to have found Martha during one of the more painful and confusing seasons of my life. She met me with warmth, understanding, and unwavering kindness. Her compassion, insight, and gentle guidance made me feel seen and understood in a way I had not experienced before. Through our work together, I learned how to trust my own voice and step into the freedom of being fully, authentically me. I cannot express how deeply her support has impacted my heart." -Therapy Client

About
Martha
I guide my clients towards becoming better versions of who they already are.
I am a trained mental health therapist, 500-level yoga instructor, mindfulness meditation practitioner and certified mindfulness teacher. My work combines decades of experience working in the psychology field with a variety of populations and settings.
By combining traditional talk therapy with tools of meditation, yoga, breathwork, mindfulness and client centered values and intentions, I can assist in the recognition that your true self goes beyond any single role or label.
My private studio sits apart from our home, nestled in a bamboo grove. It provides a sanctuary for us to do this deeply personal work together.
Throughout my career I have intentionally worked to integrate the connection between mind, body and spirit while continuing to be open to the sacredness in life’s unpredictability and impermanence.
